CCRT triples its computing capacity

Following a call for tenders launched in early 2020, the CEA and its partners from the Research and Technology Computing Center (CCRT) are investing in a new supercomputer with a peak performance of 8.8 Pflop/s, replacing the current system “Cobalt” (2.4 Pflop/s), which was put into service in 2016. It will meet the partners’ expectations with its largely increased computing capacity, and will pave the way towards new application domains due to its accelerated nodes.
It will be installed in the second quarter of 2021 in the Very Large Computing Center of the CEA (TGCC) in Bruyères-le-Châtel and available for the Major Challenges from summer 2021.
This calculator is based on the modular BullSequana XH2000 technology, the result of R&D carried out jointly by CEA and Atos, combining density and energy efficiency.
It will have 864 compute nodes based on latest generation AMD processor (Milan), 48 compute nodes based on Nvidia A100 processors and 4 very large memory nodes.
A private 2.9 PB data storage system using flash technology and spinning disks, with a bandwidth of 200 GB / s, will allow for secure data storage.
The Infiniband HDR Fat-Tree interconnection network will form the heart of this new computer. The architecture of the calculator is scalable, which will allow it to increase its capacities according to the needs of CCRT partners for the next 4 to 5 years to come.
